On Tuesday we will be heading to Nauset Light in Eastham. We (the students and teachers) are being given an amazing opportunity to work with a real Geologist. Mark Borrelli, from Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies is going to be working with grades 1-5 throughout this entire school year. He is contributing to, and helping, to make our science curriculum Cape-Cod-centric, real-world aligned, and interactive in a child friendly way! I am so excited to get the program going and am really looking forward to the students becoming "natural scientists."
On Tuesday, the fourth graders will start to collect beach profiling data using Emory Rods. Mark is going to first teach the students how to use the Emory Rods, and then we will head back and record our collected data. In March, April, and May, we will head back to the beach and see how much the beach profiles have changed. This lesson corresponds with our Earth Science Unit, and is just another way we will be able to utilize our home here on Cape Cod.
Below is a link to Woods Hole, where they have some information about Emory Rods and Beach Profiles, just in case anyone is looking for some extra reading and learning materials (: I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend! See you all tomorrow!
